Erika Auro-Romillo聽was聽working as聽a radiologic technologist in Manila聽in 2009聽when聽she met聽her future wife,聽Natalie,聽a former聽Army combat medic and health care specialist聽who聽had grown up聽in Virginia聽Beach, Virginia,聽and was visiting relatives聽in the Philippines聽at the time.聽聽聽
鈥淲hen she聽[Natalie}聽told me her circumstances,聽I knew I had to take care of her.聽It was a learning curve for me to navigate the Veterans Administration health care system,鈥澛燗uro-Romillo said.聽
As she explained it, her life partner was injured when聽deployed in Kosovo in 2001聽while聽driving an ambulance tank. The聽locking pin that secured the聽vehicle鈥檚聽hatch came off聽and the聽hatch fell on her head. Her Kevlar helmet saved her life.聽
But聽two years later,聽when deployed in Iraq,聽the聽physical demands of her job aggravated her injuries. Surgery聽to stave off neck paralysis聽had聽left her with a scar,聽unable聽to move her neck,聽and聽with intense聽back pain. Her condition unimproved, she was discharged聽in 2005.聽
The couple moved to聽the United States聽in 2014聽when it became legal for them to marry聽here,聽settled in the聽Chesapeake, Virginia, area, and went about the business of establishing and managing a workable life routine. Until, complications from subsequent lower back surgery left Auro-Romillo鈥檚 partner unable to feel her legs and feet鈥攊ncreasing the level of聽daily care she requires.聽
So Auro-Romillo balances her increased caregiving duties with her job as a senior health physics technician with聽Electric Motor and Contracting. The聽company repairs聽radiologically contaminated motors from nuclear power plants throughout the United States and Canada.聽聽She聽oversees the program, licensed by the Virginia Department of Health, to ensure the聽company鈥檚 safe use, handling and storage聽of radioactive materials.聽
鈥淚 was lucky to get that job,鈥 she said, noting that most employers had not been able to look past her education and medical credentials from the Philippines.
鈥淢y job can be challenging, but it lacks advancement opportunities. I am hoping that when I finish my master鈥檚 degree in business at UMGC, I will get to where I want to be.鈥澛犅
In other words, she said, that would mean no more night work, a regular eight-hour workday, and the ability to work from home so that she can be the best helpmate possible to her partner.聽
鈥淲hen I got the call, I was practically speechless,鈥 said聽Auro-Romillo, describing the moment she learned she had received a Pillars of Strength scholarship.聽
鈥淚t was overwhelming. I feel blessed. As the breadwinner for the family, I need to work full time, so an online degree will make everything work.鈥澛
