兔子先生Global Media Center Mt. Pleasant, MI, Caregiver Receives 2020 Pillars of Strength Scholarship

Stephanie Hall

Stephanie Hall is no stranger to caring for wounded veterans.聽

She learned much during her first marriage to a wounded Army veteran. When she met her second husband Terrance in 2015, also an Army veteran, he was going through the Veterans Treatment Court for his alcohol dependency and was not attending his PTSD treatment program regularly.聽

He first had been injured in Iraq in 2007 when his vehicle hit an IED. He was injured again in Afghanistan in 2012 when a vehicle exploded just outside his forward operating base.聽

Though he has聽been sober for more than three years and聽mentors聽other veterans with the same聽post-war issues, Hall said she must still聽adjust聽their lives to deal with聽his聽post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury.聽

鈥淲hen we first started dating, we came to the understanding that he could not live with someone 24/7, especially聽[with]聽me having younger children, because of his PTSD,鈥澛爏aid Hall, adding that between the two of them聽they have five children ranging in age聽from 11 to 26.聽

So, her husband maintains a small cabin about 45 minutes away from their home in the聽Mount Pleasant area of central Michigan. Hall said he goes there聽to get the space he needs to function聽鈥渘ormally.鈥澛燘ut, as he suffers from memory loss,聽she still cares for him regularly.聽She makes his appointments. She accompanies him on medical visits聽to make sure he tells the doctors what they need to know.聽

鈥淗e gets frustrated easily because sometimes what he wants to say doesn鈥檛 come out right,鈥 she said.聽

Then, a recent flood聽caused an unfortunate setback. It not only destroyed the cabin but also drained the nearby lake where he often took solace in fishing.聽Hall said all聽the destruction and smells reminded him of Iraq聽and he required聽some mental health counseling.聽Now, he is living in the garage next to the cabin.聽

She describes her education as spotty while juggling her multiple roles鈥攎ilitary spouse, mother, caregiver. She earned her GED in 2001, then studied to become a聽certified nursing assistant.聽Hall now works as a special education teaching assistant at a local public school.聽

鈥淚 tried to go back, and tried to go back, and I kept hitting roadblocks, hitting walls,鈥 she said of her attempts to get a degree. 鈥淎nd then every time I would try to get a job, they would say, 鈥榊ou have to have a degree,鈥 even though I had more experience than people with degrees.鈥澛

Hall said she plans to use her Pillars of Strength scholarship to earn a聽bachelor鈥檚 degree in business.聽She believes the degree and the experience she has gained as the聽elected聽president聽of聽the聽nonprofit Warriors and Caregivers United,聽will help boost the business she is starting with her husband鈥擟onnect to Heal.聽聽

Much of her volunteer time is devoted to helping other caregivers.聽 Last year聽Hall聽was selected聽as聽the Elizabeth Dole caregiver fellow for the state of Michigan.聽Hall also is聽part of the Michigan governor鈥檚 challenge to help create new statewide policies and procedures to prevent suicide among veterans and their families.聽

She spoke to the value of the Pillars of Strength Scholarship Program.聽鈥淚 work with many organizations across the state of Michigan, speaking at many functions about the struggles and roadblocks military and veterans鈥櫬燾aregivers face,鈥澛燞all聽said. 鈥淏ut without the scholarship, I would not have the money to finish a degree.鈥澛
