At first,聽Nicole Paredes-Laign was baffled by her husband鈥檚 behavior after he returned from back-to-back tours聽with the聽Air Force聽in Iraq and Afghanistan in 2011 and 2012.
He聽is still on active duty at Cannon Air Force base in Clovis, New Mexico. But,聽worn down by聽combat-triggered聽psychological damage,聽her husband聽is seeking a medical retirement.
鈥淎fter eight years聽[Justin]聽is finally getting diagnosed with聽combat聽PTSD and chronic depression,鈥澛爏aid聽Paredes-Laign, who admitted that for a long time it was hard to think of herself as a caregiver.
The idea was聽difficult聽to grasp, she said, even though聽she had聽to carefully monitor her husband鈥檚 behavior and make sure he was not exposed to conditions that would set off panic attacks.聽The ruckus made聽by聽little ones at their聽child鈥檚 fifth birthday party triggered an uncontrolled聽episode, for instance.
With the help of counselors聽Paredes-Laign聽now聽knows聽which聽warning signs to look for鈥攊solation, severe聽sleep deprivation,聽and self-medication through alcohol.
鈥淚t is my responsibility to plan ahead and ensure there will be no trigger-inducing聽scenarios聽such as聽uncontrolled crowds or an abundance of screaming children,鈥 she said. 鈥淭he task of not allowing his traumas to overtake him to the point of hospitalization falls on the individual capable of distinguishing between healthy and alarming behavior聽. . .聽me.鈥
Her husband鈥檚聽next journey聽is finding a new career suited to his setbacks, she explained.聽Her next journey, now that she聽has聽had time to reflect on what she really wants to do with her life, is to travel the education path that gets her there.
In the past, she聽had undertaken paralegal studies at Clovis Community College鈥攑erhaps to prepare her to work聽for children鈥檚 advocacy鈥攁nd was doing well academically. But聽she聽backed聽away at the end of the聽2020聽spring semester when her husband was admitted聽to聽an in-patient program for his PTSD.聽She聽said she聽needed聽to focus her time on ensuring聽the physical and mental well-being of her family.
It was a time, too, for reflection. When he receives his medical discharge, the couple will pack up their two children, ages one and five, and聽move to her hometown near Gloucester, Virginia.
Meanwhile,聽Paredes-Laign聽said she has been digging deep into her husband鈥檚 journey and coming to grips with all that it requires.聽鈥淣ow,聽I want to do something with therapy,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 think psychology would be the best thing for me to study.鈥
鈥淚 am extremely grateful to be receiving this scholarship.聽I am thankful聽to聽be recognized as a caregiver along with other incredible caregivers,鈥澛爏he said.
鈥淭he kids are great cheerleaders for me,聽but聽my husband is my聽number one cheerleader.聽He is very thankful and proud.鈥
