Joint Art Exhibition Features Artist and Mentor

University of Maryland University College (UMUC) celebrates artists Floyd Coleman and Hayward Oubre in a joint exhibition on view Sept. 30 through Jan. 20 at the UMUC Arts Program Gallery, lower level, College Park Marriott Hotel & Conference Center, Adelphi, Maryland.

Coleman taught art for more than 60 years at a variety of universities, including Howard University in Washington, D.C.—work that left him little time to promote his visual arts career. For this reason, he is best known as an authority—and for his publications—on African and African American art.

Though he defines himself as an abstract painter, Coleman’s works, which have been exhibited in prominent museums and galleries around the world, include the figurative and surrealist. UMUC’s “Rhythmic Impulses,” which includes 40 Coleman paintings, represents the artist’s first major exhibition in many years.

The exhibit also includes 25 large-scale wire sculptures by award-winning printmaker, painter, sculptor—and Coleman teacher and mentor—Hayward Oubre, who was the first person to graduate with a fine arts degree from Dillard University in Louisiana. Oubre taught at universities across the South until 1980 and continued working on his art until his death in 2006.

Coleman, and Oubre's son-in-law and heir Mervin Anthony Green, will discuss the works on display in the exhibition at the opening reception on Oct. 7. The exhibition and reception are no-cost events.
