It’s that time of year again when all manner of media offer articles that reflect on the past and contemplate the future with predictions about emerging trends and lists of what’s “out” and what’s “in” over the next 12 months.  And recently, a group of University of Maryland University College (UMUC) cyber experts offered some prognostications of their own, now posted on the university’s Cyber Connections blog.

While common sense may dictate that cybersecurity always should be on the “in” list, the digital “Pearl Harbor” that occurred with the Equifax breach indicates that cybersecurity is not always topmost in the minds of leaders across all industries, according to Ajay Gupta, program chair of Computer Networks and Cybersecurity at UMUC.

Among other projections, Gupta and colleagues Loyce Pailen, Valorie King, Jesse Varsalone, Balakrishnan Dasarathy, Bruce deGrazia, and Tamie Santiago share their ideas about what the future brings for IoT, skills-based hacking competitions, and machine learning.

In his segment, Dasarathy, who is a collegiate professor and program chair for Information Assurance in UMUC’s Graduate School, predicts blockchain technology will explode in the application space in 2018. His thoughts on the subject were picked up by reporter Chris Preimesberger, who included them in his eWEEK article, “.”
