The pandemic may have聽derailed some of your聽personal plans over the past two years, but it doesn鈥檛 have to set your career聽aspirations聽off course.聽聽

Many employers can鈥檛 find聽enough聽qualified candidates to fill聽their聽open positions.聽Employees are聽also聽leaving their jobs in record numbers聽as their priorities聽and needs聽have changed.聽This means聽now is a great time to prepare yourself to meet聽any聽new and exciting聽job聽opportunities you may encounter聽in the聽year ahead in the聽evolving labor market.聽

鈥淵ou need to actively manage your career, and聽it鈥檚 really聽important聽to聽pause once or twice each year聽to聽evaluate聽your career progression against your career goals,鈥澛爏ays聽Cathy Francois,聽UMGC鈥檚 Assistant聽Director of聽Career聽Programming. 鈥淪etting clear goals for yourself is聽an absolutely聽essential聽part of this process.鈥澛

Here聽are some tips on how聽to聽give your career goals a refresh so you鈥檝e got a clear road map for success in聽2022.聽聽

Take control of your career

If you聽haven鈥檛 revisited your career goals in a while, you鈥檙e not alone.聽Life has been universally hectic. Instead of letting the months and years聽continue to聽slip by unexamined,聽make the decision to take聽control聽of your career.聽

鈥淏lock off聽some time on your calendar to聽put some serious thought into where you are in your career and where you鈥檇 like to be in the short- and long-term,鈥澛燼dvises聽Francois.聽

If you already have written career goals, examine them with an open mind, and ask yourself聽some tough聽questions. Have you met any of your goals? If you haven鈥檛, why not? Have your priorities changed?聽Have your dreams evolved? Be honest with yourself as you figure out where you want to be.聽

If聽you鈥檙e creating聽career goals聽for聽yourself for聽the first time, it鈥檚 important to聽them聽down in writing.聽Ask yourself what you want to do. If you鈥檙e聽currently in a position you enjoy,聽research your organization鈥檚 objectives and how you can make meaningful contributions in the effort to reach them.聽

鈥淚f you want to聽advance聽at your company,聽capture what your next career move should be. If you鈥檙e seeking a promotion, what qualifications do you need to gain to get there?鈥 says聽Francois. 鈥淚f聽your聽current employer doesn鈥檛 have opportunities for you to advance,聽who does?聽And how are you going to聽break into that company?鈥澛

Goal setting聽is easy if you follow the聽tried-and-true聽method of setting聽goals that are SMART,聽or聽Specific,聽Measurable,聽Achievable,聽Relevant and聽Time bound.聽

Specific goals contain details about what聽exactly聽you want to accomplish. While 鈥淓xpanding your customer base鈥 is vague, 鈥淐onverting聽20 percent of your leads into opportunities鈥 is an example of a specific goal. That鈥檚 because the goal explains聽what you鈥檙e actually going to do to get more customers.聽The second goals聽is聽also measurable, as it quantifies what you鈥檙e working to achieve.聽

You also want to make sure your goals are actually attainable.聽

鈥淚f your goal is聽simply聽to get a promotion,聽you might not be able to achieve that聽in just one step,鈥 notes Francois.聽

You may need to set smaller goals聽that are relevant聽to your desired outcome. These will help聽prepare you to meet the larger goal. For example, you might need to earn a master鈥檚 degree or gain more management experience to qualify for the promotion you want.聽

鈥淎s yourself how you can break down your larger goals into baby steps,鈥 adds聽Francois.聽鈥淭hen, when you revisit your goals throughout the year, you can easily determine if you鈥檝e made the progress you want to make. If you鈥檙e not tracking to your plan, it鈥檚 perfectly fine to adjust your timeline. Your plans should be fluid.鈥澛

Whatever your goals are, they should also have a deadline.聽聽

Hold yourself accountable

Work and life are busy. If your goals are out of sight and out of mind, it鈥檚 easy to forget about them.聽There are some simple things you can do to ensure that doesn鈥檛 happen.聽First,聽find a conspicuous place to post your goals, whether it鈥檚 on a bulletin board in your office or on the聽screensaver on your computer. This way you鈥檒l be reminded to stay on track every time you see聽them.聽

It鈥檚 also important to create a plan to support聽your progress.聽It can be as simple as a checklist of聽tasks and milestones聽jotted down in a journal or as elaborate as a聽more formal strategy document. As long as you document聽a blueprint for how to reach your goals, it doesn鈥檛 matter how you do it. Then, refer to it often.聽

鈥淎t the beginning of聽each聽year, schedule time with yourself once a quarter to review your goals,鈥 says Francois.聽鈥淲hen you know you鈥檙e going to have to answer to yourself, you鈥檒l be more likely to stay focused.聽

Positive peer pressure can also help you stay on track. You can share your goals with an accountability team of friends, family members, colleagues and mentors and discuss your progress with them along the way. This kind of informal support can help you stay motivated over the long haul or when you encounter bumps in the road.聽

While the road to success may seem like a long and winding one,聽you鈥檒l reap the benefits of setting goals and聽staying the course.聽聽

鈥淛ust like with any journey, you鈥檙e bound to聽encounter unexpected setbacks and聽delightful surprises,鈥 says Francois. 鈥淚t鈥檚 important to have goals, but it鈥檚 just as important to remain open to where the road takes you.鈥
